PRACTICAL GUIDE
How text is counted
Counts update as you type, and all processing happens in this browser.
- Words use Intl.Segmenter when available; otherwise groups of letters, marks and numbers are counted. Hyphens separate words.
- Characters count visible graphemes when supported, and code points otherwise. Spaces, tabs and line breaks count in the total and are excluded from the second count.
- Each line break creates a line; a final line break represents a final empty line. Empty text has zero lines and paragraphs.
- A paragraph is a non-empty block separated from another by one or more blank lines.
- Sentence count is an estimate based on ending punctuation; abbreviations and uncommon punctuation can affect it.
- Reading time uses a reference speed of 225 words per minute in English. It is an estimate, not a personal measurement.
Practical example
“Hello, world. How are you?” has 5 words and 2 approximate sentences. Use it to review copy, prepare assignments or fit a description before publishing.
